More about this artwork
One of the striking works by the post-Impressionist artist Paul Gauguin is "La Maison Du Pendu," painted around 1889-90. This enchanting piece encapsulates Gauguin’s unique approach to color and form, marking his departure from the realism that defined much of 19th-century European painting. The painting portrays a solitary, somewhat stark house perched on a cliff overlooking the sea. The landscape is rendered in vibrant, almost surreal colors, highlighting Gauguin’s penchant for using color to convey emotional depth rather than realistic depiction. The house itself, with its rigid, defined structure, contrasts strikingly against the fluid, dynamic brushstrokes of the sea and the sky.Experimenting with perspective and form, Gauguin invites the viewer to look beyond the physical landscape into the emotional landscape of the scene. The choice of the house, titled as 'The House of the Hanged Man' in English, suggests a narrative steeped in mystery and history, which Gauguin leaves deliberately untold, allowing the viewers to entangle their interpretations with the expressive hues and forms of the painting.

Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin was a French Post-Impressionist artist. Unappreciated until after his death, Gauguin is now recognized for his experimental use of color and Synthetist style that were distinct from Impressionism. Toward the end of his life, he spent ten years in French Polynesia. The paintings from this time depict people or landscapes from that region.
