More about this artwork

In this evocative painting by David Roberts, entitled "Abyssinian Slaves Resting at Korti, Nubia," we glimpse a quiet and poignant moment along the Nile River during the mid-19th century. Painted between 1846 and 1849, this artwork captures a group of Abyssinian slaves in a serene pause from their travels or labors. The setting is rendered with soft, neutral tones depicting an expansive desert landscape that suggests the vast and sometimes harsh environs of Nubia. The central figures in the painting, dressed in minimal yet colorful attire, are depicted with a sense of individuality and quiet dignity despite their bondage. Some are seated, gathering in a relaxed circle, while others lean against a lone palm tree, which offers a frail shadow in the stark landscape. Simple pottery and a water jug, elements crucial for survival in such an environment, are placed gently on the sandy ground.Roberts’ work is well-known for its careful attention to detail and cultural accuracy, which is reflected in the clothing and accessories worn by the figures. Each individual’s pose and expression convey a range of human emotions, from weariness to contemplation, allowing the viewer to ponder the personal stories intertwined with historical contexts of the era. This painting is not just a visual record but also an invitation to reflect on the history and lives of those depicted. As viewers, we are drawn into a narrative that is as educational as it is emotionally compelling, offering a poignant reminder of humanity's resilience and the complex histories of African regions under the shadows of colonialism.

David Roberts (24 October 1796 – 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia, a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841.
