More about this artwork

Artist: David Roberts"Hillslap" by David Roberts is an evocative pencil sketch that captures the essence of a rustic landscape featuring an ancient tower house, which stands as a silent witness to history. The drawing, rendered with delicate lines and light shading, portrays the tower in a state of graceful dilapidation, suggesting the passage of time and the continuous battle against the elements.Situated among rolling hills and sparse trees, the tower in "Hillslap" appears to emerge from the earth itself, rooted deeply in the traditions and stories of the past. The composition draws the viewer's eye directly to the structural details of the building, from its weathered walls to the fragmented windows, each telling a unique story of decay and endurance. The artwork, though minimalistic, evokes a profound sense of solitude and contemplation, inviting viewers to ponder the lives that once filled the now quiet ruins. It is a testament to Roberts' skill that he can suggest so much history and emotion through such understated means. As part of our collection, "Hillslap" invites contemplation on the part of the viewer, offering a window into a bygone era through the skilled hand of David Roberts.

David Roberts (24 October 1796 – 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia, a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841.
