More about this artwork

Édouard Vuillard, a master of intimate, interior settings, brings us a captivating scene in the painting "Madame Vuillard Et Annette, Rue De Calais". This artwork immerses us into a quiet, yet emotionally resonant moment between two figures, believed to be the artist's mother, Madame Vuillard, and Annette, a close family acquaintance. In the composition, Madame Vuillard is depicted seated, her face turned slightly to capture her profile. She appears deeply contemplative, her expression serene yet tinged with pensiveness. Her attire, a simple red dress, contrasts warmly against the subdued tones of the room. Standing beside her is Annette, rendered with a soft, commanding presence. She gazes thoughtfully into the distance, her posture both protective and deferential towards the older woman. The dynamic between the two suggests a moment of quiet companionship and mutual respect. The setting is a typical Vuillard interior, rich with texture and layered with the everyday. A mirror and a framed picture hang on the walls, contributing to the sense of depth and personal history. The soft brushwork and muted palette typical of Vuillard’s style evoke a sense of warmth and intimacy, inviting the viewer to step into the quiet world of his subjects. This painting not only offers a glimpse into Vuillard's personal life but also reflects his ability to find beauty and complexity in the seemingly mundane.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
