More about this artwork

Welcome to a detailed glimpse into "Le peintre Ker-Xavier Roussel et sa fille" (The Painter Ker-Xavier Roussel and His Daughter), a captivating painting completed in 1903 by the notable post-impressionist artist Édouard Vuillard. This artwork portrays an intimate and serene moment between the French painter Ker-Xavier Roussel and his young daughter in what appears to be a cozy living room. In this depiction, Roussel is seen lounging in a chair, his attention seemingly absorbed by a book, embodying a calm and contemplative demeanor. His relaxed posture and focus contrast gently with the energetic stance of his daughter, who stands at the center of the painting. Dressed in a vividly patterned dress that echoes the floral motif of the curtain behind, she looks directly at the viewer, her expression one of youthful curiosity and readiness. The room setting is warmly decorated, featuring richly patterned textiles that showcase Vuillard's attention to detail and love for intricate designs. The red striped rug, ornate furniture, and detailed floral curtain add a depth of texture that makes the scene inviting. Notable also is the delicate play of light that filters through the window, highlighting the figures and objects with a soft luminosity that adds life to the scene.Vuillard's skill in merging domestic life scenes with artistic composition is masterfully demonstrated in this painting. He elegantly captures the bonds of family within everyday surroundings, making this a poignant study of personal relationships and their peaceful, unremarked moments together.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
