More about this artwork

Interior at Saint-Jacut, painted in 1909 by Édouard Vuillard, is a remarkable example of the artist's deftness at capturing intimate and quiet moments of domestic life through a Post-Impressionist lens. The painting reveals an indoor scene delicately composed with muted tones and textured brushwork, a signature style of Vuillard. In this artwork, we see a crowded yet cozy room filled with a flurry of everyday activities and small domestic details. The central figure, framed by an open green door, appears mid-conversation, suggesting a paused moment or an interrupted story. His face carries an expression of casual engagement, an illustration of daily domestic interactions. To the left stands a child, whose presence adds a layer of familial warmth and curiosity. In the foreground, a dog lies sprawled on the floor, contributing to the relaxed, lived-in atmosphere of the scene.Vuillard's use of soft, overlapping colors and patterns emphasizes the textural quality of the room, from the ornate wallpaper to the cluttered table, which seems strewn with objects of daily use. His skillful blend of light and structure paints a vivid portrait of a moment serene yet alive, capturing the essence of interior life. This painting not only showcases Vuillard's mastery over color and form but also reflects his ongoing interest in exploring the nuance and subtlety of private spaces.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
