More about this artwork

We are delighted to feature Édouard Vuillard's captivating work, "Interieur à la suspension," dated from 1898 to 1899. This painting stands as a testament to Vuillard's unique ability to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary through his signature intimate and intricate style. In "Interieur à la suspension," the viewer is drawn into a cozy, private domestic scene, which is a hallmark of Vuillard’s work. The painting illustrates the corner of a room where the eye-catching details bring the interior to life. The right side of the composition reveals a glimpse into another room, hinting at the depth and complexity of the space. The doorway serves not only as a physical transition but also as a visual conduit that adds a mysterious dimension to the scene. The foreground is dominated by a hanging plant whose leaves drape elegantly, casting shadows and adding an organic quality to the rectilinear surrounds. Below the plant, a richly patterned carpet in hues of red and green anchors the composition. To the left, a wall adorned with floral wallpaper and a hint of a gold-framed mirror introduces luxurious textures and patterns, showcasing Vuillard’s attention to detail and his love for textiles.Vuillard's masterful use of color and texture creates a warm, enveloping atmosphere, inviting the viewer to ponder the stories and lives that unfold within these walls. His technique of blending colors and the intricate play of light and shadow make "Interieur à la suspension" not just a view into a room, but a window into the comforting solitude of domestic life at the turn of the century. This painting is a beautiful example of how Vuillard's works encapsulate the essence of intimate interiors, making the mundane mesmerizing.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
