More about this artwork

This captivating work by Édouard Vuillard, entitled "Lucy Hessel Reading" (Lucy Hessel lisant), is a beautiful example of intimate domestic scenes for which Vuillard is renowned. Painted in 1913, this artwork depicts Lucy Hessel, a frequent muse and close associate of the artist, engrossed in reading. The setting is likely a room in the Hessels' home, filled with warmth and comfort. In this painting, Lucy is portrayed seated at a cluttered table, her attention fixed on a book. Her posture and the quiet concentration on her face invite viewers to a moment of tranquil solitude. Vuillard’s use of vibrant, textured brushstrokes enhances the cosy atmosphere, with rich blues and greens dominating the scene. The interior elements, such as the patterned tablecloth, the softly glowing lampshade, and glimpses of the wooden furniture, all contribute to the serene and inviting environment.Vuillard’s technique of blending colors and shapes creates a dreamy quality where the boundaries within the room gently blur, reflecting the immersive experience of reading. This piece is not just a portrait of Lucy; it is also an exploration of color, light, and texture, showcasing Vuillard’s mastery in portraying intimate indoor settings.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
