More about this artwork

Édouard Vuillard's remarkable painting, "Lucien Rosengart at his Work Table," crafted in 1930, captures the essence of focused intellectual endeavor and the personal environment of its subject, Lucien Rosengart. In this intimate portrayal, Rosengart, an inventive engineer and businessman, is depicted with a serene and contemplative expression as he sits at his cluttered work desk. The setting is richly detailed, offering insights into Rosengart’s world through meticulously rendered objects that surround him.The painting is characterized by Vuillard's signature use of rich, textured colors and complex patterns that harmonize to create a vivid yet harmonious atmosphere. The background features vertical striations, perhaps curtains or panels, that add depth and a sense of confinement to the composition. The wooden textures are rendered in warm browns and tans, which contrast subtly with the cooler, shadowed tones of Rosengart’s suit. The desk is strewn with various items—a testament to Rosengart's busy and productive life. These include papers, possibly blueprints or business documents, a writing box, books, and a beautifully detailed desk lamp with a floral motif, which provides a soft glow adding warmth to the scene. Each element is painted with meticulous attention to detail, suggesting their importance in Rosengart’s daily routine and hinting at his personal tastes and the era's aesthetic. This painting not only showcases Vuillard's mastery of color and texture but also provides a window into the professional environment of a notable figure, capturing a moment of quiet concentration amidst a life of industrial and mechanical innovation.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
