More about this artwork

Discover the warmth and intimacy of daily life captured in "La Saucière Et Les Ronds De Serviette" by the celebrated French artist Édouard Vuillard, a prominent figure in the post-impressionist movement and the Nabis group. Painted circa 1896-97, this composition is an exquisite example of Vuillard’s keen observation of domestic spaces and the objects within them. The artwork presents a close-up, almost fragmented view of a dining table aftermath, showcasing Vuillard's mastery in rendering textures and his experimental approach to perspective. The central focus of the painting is a saucière, or gravy boat, delicately detailed with blue floral patterns—a vivid contrast to the rich, earthy tones surrounding it. Nearby, neatly arranged, are what appear to be rolled napkin rings, which add a touch of routine elegance to the scene. Details such as these invite the viewer into a private world, as if stumbling upon a moment just after a family meal.Vuillard's choice of palette, primarily deep browns, reds, and hints of green, interplays with light and shadow, creating a cozy yet somewhat muted atmosphere, typical of his indoor scenes. The textured application of paint further adds to the sense of an impromptu glimpse into everyday life, highlighting the unspoken beauty of ordinary moments and objects.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
