More about this artwork

"Genesis II (Schöpfungsgeschichte II)" by Franz Marc, crafted in April 1914, exemplifies a pivotal moment in Marc's artistic journey. This woodcut print is a rich tableau of abstract forms and swirling colors, depicting the biblical story of creation with a unique, modern twist. In the composition, Marc employs a dynamic array of shapes and lines to evoke the chaotic yet harmonious genesis of life. The print features abstract representations that suggest elements of the natural world without depicting them literally. The bold, contrasting colors — deep greens, bright yellows, and stark blacks — add a vibrant intensity to the scene, enhancing the sense of a world emerging from darkness into being.Marc's work is known for its emotional depth and its connection to themes of nature and spirituality. In "Genesis II," these themes are vividly present, inviting the viewer to contemplate the origins of life and the artistic expression of creation myths through the lens of early 20th-century European art. This print not only reflects Marc's interest in the spiritual and symbolic but also demonstrates his mastery of the woodcut technique, which he uses here to explore the textural possibilities that contribute to the overall impact of the piece.

Franz Moritz Wilhelm Marc (8 February 1880 – 4 March 1916) was a German painter and printmaker, one of the key figures of German Expressionism. He was a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a journal whose name later became synonymous with the circle of artists collaborating in it.

His mature works mostly are animals, and are known for bright colors. He was drafted to serve in the German Army at the beginning of World War I, and died two years later at the Battle of Verdun.

In the 1930s, the Nazis named him a degenerate artist as part of their suppression of modern art. However, most of his work survived World War II, securing his legacy. His work is now exhibited in many eminent galleries and museums. When up for auction, his major paintings attract large sums, with a record of £42,654,500 for Die Füchse (The Foxes).
