More about this artwork

"Dreaming Horse," painted by the acclaimed German Expressionist Franz Marc in 1913, offers a profound visual journey into the emotional and spiritual life of animals, a theme dear to Marc's heart. This painting, rendered in Marc's distinctive style, uses vibrant colors and dynamic geometric shapes to transcend traditional visual forms and imbue the canvas with deeper meanings. At first glance, the viewer might be taken by the abstract arrangement of shapes and colors that dominate the scene. However, upon closer inspection, the form of a horse, lying prone and enveloped in a dreamlike state, begins to emerge. Marc masterfully blends shades of blue and black to craft the horse's tranquil figure, which appears both restful and enigmatic. The background and the space around the horse swirl with a mix of shapes and contrasting colors like reds and greens, suggesting a landscape that is as internal and subjective as it is external. The elements around the horse, which might be interpreted as fragments of dreams or nature's own spirits, complement the overall sense of peace and introspection."Dreaming Horse" is not just an exploration of color and form but a reflection on the inner worlds of animals as perceived by Marc. This painting invites viewers to contemplate the serene and mystical aspects of nature, encouraging a connection that is deeply empathetic and visually profound.Displaying this masterpiece on our website not only enriches our collection but also continues to inspire and challenge our perceptions of the boundaries between the real and the ethereal, the animal and the spiritual.

Franz Moritz Wilhelm Marc (8 February 1880 – 4 March 1916) was a German painter and printmaker, one of the key figures of German Expressionism. He was a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a journal whose name later became synonymous with the circle of artists collaborating in it.

His mature works mostly are animals, and are known for bright colors. He was drafted to serve in the German Army at the beginning of World War I, and died two years later at the Battle of Verdun.

In the 1930s, the Nazis named him a degenerate artist as part of their suppression of modern art. However, most of his work survived World War II, securing his legacy. His work is now exhibited in many eminent galleries and museums. When up for auction, his major paintings attract large sums, with a record of £42,654,500 for Die Füchse (The Foxes).
