More about this artwork

Explore the elegant world of the 1920s captured by George Barbier in his captivating illustration, "Au Revoir" (1924). This artwork skillfully combines the Art Deco style with a hint of narrative charm, depicting a sophisticated farewell scene amidst the opulence of a high-society gathering. In this beautiful portrayal, a group of stylish individuals is seen parting ways in a grandiose architectural setting with large arching windows that exude a sense of luxury and refinement. Two women in exquisitely detailed flapper dresses, complete with ornate accessories and feather embellishments, dominate the foreground. They wave goodbye to friends, capturing the emotion of a heartfelt departure.A strikingly blue vintage car adds a touch of class to the scene, its design reflecting the technological progress of the era. Inside, a woman and a driver, both dressed elegantly, suggest readiness for a journey, perhaps signaling the end of a delightful evening. Each character in the illustration contributes to the vibrant, yet transient, essence of the 1920s social elite, artfully combining fashion, emotion, and storytelling into a cohesive visual experience. Barbier’s use of soft colors and sharp lines not only highlights the fashion of the time but also the fleeting moments of joy and sadness inherent in every goodbye.
