More about this artwork

George Barbier's enchanting painting "Roses dan la nuit" (1914) masterfully captures an ethereal moment frozen in moonlit color. The artwork, reflecting an Art Deco style, illustrates an elegant evening scene with two figures surrounded by a lush crescent of blooming red roses against a deep blue background, shimmering as if under the night sky. This romantic setting is enhanced by the man and woman's exquisite attire and the delicate interactions of their poses and expressions. On the left, a woman in a flowing mustard dress dances gracefully, her arms aloft and a fan in one hand, captured mid-twirl as if she revels in the night's cool breeze. Her attire is marked by bold, simplistic lines and the soft drapery common in Art Deco fashion illustrations. To the right, a man, portrayed in profile, offers roses to the woman. His clothing, particularly his blue jumpsuit and headgear, gives him a dashing, somewhat adventurous look, suggesting he might have arrived from a journey. The drama and romance of the moment are accentuated by the stylized roses and the contrasting colors. Barbier's work not only celebrates the beauty and stylization of the era but also conveys a story of romance, gesture, and the enchanting mystery of an evening where roses bloom under the starry sky.
