More about this artwork
George Barbier's artwork titled "Grande robe du soir" from 1914 is a quintessential example of Art Deco illustration, a style marked by rich colors, bold geometric shapes, and lavish ornamentation. In this striking piece, the figure of a woman is elegantly poised in an exquisite evening gown that defines the sophistication and opulence of early 20th-century fashion. The woman is adorned with an intricate headdress embellished with beads and feathers, which epitomizes the era’s fascination with exotic luxury. Her dress, detailed with floral motifs and intricate beading, cascades gracefully, accentuated by the geometric lines that drape across her form, suggesting both structure and fluidity. This painting is surrounded by a decorative border featuring stylized willow trees that gently arch towards the figure, with delicate branches that mimic the flow of the gown. Perched gracefully on one of these branches is a peacock, a bird often associated with beauty and prestige, which complements the theme of refined elegance in the artwork."Grande robe du soir" not only captures the essence of fashion in the Art Deco period but also reflects the artistic ingenuity of George Barbier, whose work continues to influence and inspire the realms of fashion and art.
