More about this artwork
"Double Portrait No. 2 (Katharine and Anthony West)" is a compelling painting by Frances Hodgkins, a prominent figure in British Modernism. Completed in 1937, this artwork presents two figures portrayed with distinct, expressive brushstrokes that emphasize their individual personalities and shared bond. The left side of the painting features Katharine, whose presence is evoked through vibrant reds and calming whites, complementing her introspective gaze and subtly detailed facial features, which convey a sense of contemplation and depth. Her attire suggests a blend of casual elegance, marked by a fluid, artistic style that resonates with the overall mood of the painting. To her right, Anthony is depicted with a bold use of color, particularly the dominant red tones of his garment, which reflect a strong, perhaps more resolute character. His face, characterized by sharper lines and a forward-looking expression, contrasts with Katharine’s more reflective demeanor, introducing a dynamic element to the composition.Together, the figures in "Double Portrait No. 2" are encapsulated within a softly tumultuous background that seems to echo their thoughts and emotions, blurring the lines between the tangible and the psychological.

Frances Mary Hodgkins (28 April 1869 – 13 May 1947) was a New Zealand painter chiefly of landscape and still life, and for a short period was a designer of textiles. She was born and raised in New Zealand, but spent most of her working life in England. She is considered one of New Zealand's most prestigious and influential painters, although it is the work from her life in Europe, rather than her home country, on which her reputation rests.
