More about this artwork

William Bouguereau, a master of French academic painting, brilliantly captures the ethereal grace of Cupid in his work "Cupid Flying Over Water." This stunning painting portrays Cupid, the Roman god of love, hovering delicately over a calm body of water, with his feet just skimming the water's surface, creating gentle ripples. The figure is suspended by a branch held in his left hand, suggesting a playful swing or flight.Cupid is depicted with sprightly, translucent wings that emphasize his divine nature. His pose is light and airy, conveying the weightlessness and agility typical of mythological beings. Bouguereau’s use of soft, earthy hues and the intricate detailing of the foliage and reflections in the water enhance the tranquil and inviting ambience of the setting.Adorned only with a vine around his lower body and the green foliage that frames him, Cupid is shown in a moment of youthful innocence and joy, contrasting with his usual role in provoking adult passions and desires. This portrayal invites viewers to explore themes of purity, serenity, and the whimsical nature of love.Bouguereau's skillful technique and his ability to communicate beauty and emotion through realism are evident in this painting. It is a celebration of the enchantment of childhood and the timeless allure of classical mythology.

William-Adolphe Bouguereau was a French academic painter. In paintings of the realistic genre, he used mythological themes, modern interpretation of classical themes, emphasizing the female human body. During his lifetime, he achieved great popularity in France and the United States, was awarded many official honors, and sold his works for top prices. In the early twentieth century, Bouguereau and his art disappeared from the public eye, partly due to its changing artistic tastes. A resurgence of interest in figurative painting in the 1980s led to a rediscovery of Bouguereau and his work. He completed 822 known paintings, but the whereabouts of many are still unknown.
