More about this artwork
"Pavement (Cairo)" by John Singer Sargent is an exceptional painting that captures a striking view of interlacing geometric and floral designs paving an expansive courtyard, typical of Islamic architecture. Painted in 1891, during Sargent’s travels to Egypt, this artwork showcases his skill in depicting light and architectural elements with a vibrant yet subtle palette. This painting specifically highlights an intricate mosaic floor that appears bathed in sunlight, contrasting shadows and light areas that suggest a sunlit day. The foreground details are particularly arresting with their clarity and texture, inviting the viewer to appreciate the craftsmanship of the pavement. The architectural surroundings frame the mosaic, guiding the viewer’s eye deeper into the scene, through softly defined archways and doors leading to interior spaces mysterious in their darkness.Sargent's use of loose, expressive brushstrokes gives the painting an almost ephemeral quality, capturing not just the visual spectacle but also the ambiance of the place. This work not only reflects Sargent's artistic mastery but also his appreciation for the cultural and historical essence of the locations he visited.

Born in Florence to American expatriate parents, John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) is considered Europe's leading portrait painter of the Edwardian era. He was educated at both Accademia delle Belle Arti and Paris's École des Beaux Arts. While in Paris, under the guidance of Émile–Auguste Carolus–Duran, a portraitist and muralist, Sargent learned to paint directly from observation without first sketching, employing a fluidity, influenced by the Impressionists. Sargent created more than 2,900 paintings, mainly portraits and landscapes from his travels across the Atlantic, Europe, the Middle East and America.
