More about this artwork
"Lady and Child Asleep in a Punt under the Willows," painted in 1887 by the renowned John Singer Sargent, is a serene depiction of tranquility and pastoral leisure. This artwork captures an intimate and gentle moment: a woman and a young child, presumably her child, blissfully asleep in a small boat, or punt, nestled under the drooping branches of willow trees. The painting is characterized by Sargent’s masterful use of light, reflected brilliantly on the ripples of the water and filtering through the willow branches to bathe the subjects in a soft, dappled sunlight. The woman, adorned in a wide-brimmed hat and a white dress, lays beside the child, their peaceful expressions suggesting a moment of complete relaxation and detachment from the world. The vibrant red of the punt contrasts strikingly with the cool tones of the water and the greens of the foliage, creating a visual harmony that echoes the scene's peaceful atmosphere.Sargent's skill in capturing the texture of the fabrics and the luminosity of the setting contributes to a palpable sense of warmth and peacefulness.

Born in Florence to American expatriate parents, John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) is considered Europe's leading portrait painter of the Edwardian era. He was educated at both Accademia delle Belle Arti and Paris's École des Beaux Arts. While in Paris, under the guidance of Émile–Auguste Carolus–Duran, a portraitist and muralist, Sargent learned to paint directly from observation without first sketching, employing a fluidity, influenced by the Impressionists. Sargent created more than 2,900 paintings, mainly portraits and landscapes from his travels across the Atlantic, Europe, the Middle East and America.
