We are delighted to present "Robert De Cévrieux" (1879), a charming portrait by the renowned American artist John Singer Sargent, known for his evocative interpretations of his subjects. This exquisite work captures the youthful innocence and subtle complexity of a young boy, Robert de Cévrieux, portrayed with an engaging presence that is typical of Sargent’s masterful approach to portraiture. In this painting, Robert, a young boy clothed in a formal black suit complete with a crisp white collar and vibrant red accessories that add a pop of color to his outfit, holds a cherished toy—a red horse, suggesting nuances of youthful play and nobility. His companion, a black dog with a glossy coat, appears almost protective in stance, adding a lively contrast to the serene demeanor of the child. Sargent’s skill in rendering the textures—from the softness of the dog's coat to the silky sheen of the boy's outfit—and the insightful depiction of Robert’s expression, captures a moment of childhood poised between carefree innocence and the cusp of more sophisticated stages of life. This painting not only highlights Sargent's ability to depict human and animal anatomy with vitality and precision but also showcases his incredible talent in using color to enhance the emotive quality of his subjects. Born in Florence to American expatriate parents, John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) is considered Europe's leading portrait painter of the Edwardian era. He was educated at both Accademia delle Belle Arti and Paris's École des Beaux Arts. While in Paris, under the guidance of Émile–Auguste Carolus–Duran, a portraitist and muralist, Sargent learned to paint directly from observation without first sketching, employing a fluidity, influenced by the Impressionists. Sargent created more than 2,900 paintings, mainly portraits and landscapes from his travels across the Atlantic, Europe, the Middle East and America.
