More about this artwork

In this enchanting artwork by John Singer Sargent, titled "Two Girls on a Lawn" (circa 1889), we witness a vivid portrayal of leisure and intimacy. The painting captures two young women enjoying a quiet moment in a lush green landscape. Their relaxed postures and close proximity suggest a deep comfort and familiarity between them, as they seemingly escape the busyness of their daily lives. On the left, one girl, adorned with a light-colored hat with a decorative black ribbon, rests her head on her arm, lost in thought or perhaps lightly dozing. The other girl, appearing more contemplative, gazes off into the distance. Her white dress spills elegantly onto the grass, contrasting starkly with the vibrant green that surrounds them. They are both dressed in the finery typical of the period, suggesting they come from a world where such peaceful reprieves are a cherished commodity.Sargent's use of quick, expressive brushstrokes captures the vibrancy of the outdoors and accentuates the fleeting nature of the moment. The rich greens and the fluid whites convey movement—the rustle of grass, the gentle shift of fabric. It’s a snapshot of an era, yet timeless in its depiction of friendship and repose. This painting not only showcases Sargent’s mastery over color and form but also offers a glimpse into the tranquil aspects of 19th-century life. It's a testament to the joy of simple pleasures and the beauty of spending time with a close friend.

Born in Florence to American expatriate parents, John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) is considered Europe's leading portrait painter of the Edwardian era. He was educated at both Accademia delle Belle Arti and Paris's École des Beaux Arts. While in Paris, under the guidance of Émile–Auguste Carolus–Duran, a portraitist and muralist, Sargent learned to paint directly from observation without first sketching, employing a fluidity, influenced by the Impressionists. Sargent created more than 2,900 paintings, mainly portraits and landscapes from his travels across the Atlantic, Europe, the Middle East and America.
