More about this artwork

‘A Capriote’ is one of the captivating early works of American artist John Singer Sargent, painted during his stay in the picturesque island of Capri, Italy in 1878. This enchanting painting reflects Sargent's incredible skill in capturing the essence and spirit of his subjects with remarkable immediacy and precision. The scene is set in a lush, sun-dappled landscape which beautifully frames a young woman in traditional attire. The woman, a native of Capri, is depicted in a moment of daily life. With her back turned to the viewer, she is shown carrying a bundle of sticks, perhaps for use in cooking or heating, a common chore in the rural lifestyle of Capri at the time.Sargent’s use of light and shadow, rendered through relaxed yet precise brushstrokes, creates a vivid texture and movement that feels almost palpable. The rustic setting and gentle, muted color palette evoke a sense of tranquility and timelessness. This piece is not just a portrait, but a window into the simple pastoral life on Capri, highlighting Sargent’s ability to blend portraiture with environmental narrative.

Born in Florence to American expatriate parents, John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) is considered Europe's leading portrait painter of the Edwardian era. He was educated at both Accademia delle Belle Arti and Paris's École des Beaux Arts. While in Paris, under the guidance of Émile–Auguste Carolus–Duran, a portraitist and muralist, Sargent learned to paint directly from observation without first sketching, employing a fluidity, influenced by the Impressionists. Sargent created more than 2,900 paintings, mainly portraits and landscapes from his travels across the Atlantic, Europe, the Middle East and America.
