More about this artwork

Titled "Der Prediger" (The Preacher), this compelling artwork by Karl Wiener, created around 1926, depicts a striking figure that captures the essence of expression and emotion through its minimalist yet powerful strokes. The drawing, primarily in pencil, shows a solitary figure engrossed in what appears to be a moment of passionate oration or preaching. The preacher, defined by exaggerated gestures and a contorted facial expression, raises one hand emphatically, perhaps punctuating a profound point in his sermon. His eyes are closed, suggesting an inward focus or perhaps a deep spiritual fervor. The simple, flowing lines of his robe contrast with the angular sharpness of his hand and face, adding a dynamic tension to the piece.Set against a roughly textured background, the image evokes a sense of movement and urgency, as if the preacher is surrounded by an unseen force that drives his message forward. Karl Wiener's use of shadows and light adds depth and a somber tone to the depiction, reflecting the serious nature of the subject."Der Prediger" is not only a representation of a religious figure but also a profound commentary on the power of speech and the human expression of belief and conviction.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
