More about this artwork

We proudly present Peter Paul Rubens' captivating masterpiece, "Achilles Discovered By Ulysses Among The Daughters Of Lycomedes," painted between 1630 and 1635. This illustrious artwork weaves a tale from Greek mythology, vividly brought to life through Rubens' dynamic style and vivid color palette. The painting depicts the moment when Ulysses (Odysseus), the clever Greek hero, reveals the true identity of Achilles, who had been hidden among the daughters of King Lycomedes on the island of Skyros. According to legend, Achilles' mother, Thetis, knowing that her son would die if he went to war, disguised him as a woman and hid him among the king’s daughters to keep him safe from the Trojan War.Rubens captures the critical moment of discovery with dramatic flair. Ulysses, on the right, looks on with a knowing gaze as Achilles, dressed in vibrant red and orange, instinctively reaches for the sword among the gifts intended to entice the princesses. This instinctive action betrays his true masculine nature and his identity as the greatest of all Greek warriors.Around Achilles, the daughters of Lycomedes react in various ways, their expressions ranging from surprise to admiration, beautifully illustrating the sudden shift in the scene's mood. The composition is bustling with energy and movement, which is a testament to Rubens' mastery in depicting complex narrative scenes. Above, playful cherubs add a heavenly aspect to the scene, while the detailed architectural elements and lush draperies enhance the grandeur of the moment. This painting not only showcases Rubens’ skills as a storyteller but also his ability to convey psychological depth and dynamic motion, making this historic and mythological moment resonate with vitality and drama.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
