More about this artwork

Our new exhibit features a captivating artwork titled "Danaë," created by the eminent Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens. This etching beautifully captures a moment from classical mythology, infused with Rubens' characteristic dynamism and emotion. In the "Danaë," Rubens depicts the young princess of Argos, who, according to myth, was isolated in a bronze tower by her father, King Acrisius, due to a prophecy that her son would eventually kill him. Despite the king’s efforts, Zeus, drawn by Danaë's beauty, visits her in the form of a shower of gold. Rubens’ illustration masterfully captures this divine and miraculous moment. Danaë is seen reclining, her body language open and yielding to the golden rain—an allegory for Zeus himself—that promises to impregnate her with the future hero, Perseus. This piece is particularly remarkable for its fluid lines which suggest movement and the ethereal nature of the encounter. The sketch-like quality of the etching, with its dynamic strokes and minimal detail, conveys the swift and supernatural nature of the event, emphasizing emotion and impact over meticulousness."Danaë" by Rubens not only portrays a mythological event but also invites viewers to contemplate themes of destiny, power, and intervention. It is an exemplary piece that showcases Ruben's prowess in handling mythological subjects with a deeply human and expressive touch.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
