More about this artwork

Peter Paul Rubens' dramatic and evocative painting, titled "Saint Teresa of Ávila Interceding for Souls in Purgatory," stands as a monumental depiction of spiritual intercession and divine mercy. Painted between 1630 and 1635, this work showcases Rubens' mastery in portraying complex themes through rich, emotive imagery. At the center of the composition, Saint Teresa of Ávila, a revered mystic and reformer of the Carmelite order, is depicted in fervent prayer. Her face, marked by an expression of earnest supplication, is turned upwards towards a figure of Christ, who dominates the scene with an imposing yet compassionate presence. Dressed in flowing robes with a striking red cape that gently drapes over his arm, Christ's demeanor towards Teresa is one of attentive benevolence, signaling a divine reception to her pleas.Below these celestial figures, the plight of souls in Purgatory unfolds. These figures, rendered with intense emotion and physicality, represent the suffering souls for whom Teresa intercedes. Their varied expressions and gestures of torment and hope vividly capture their longing for salvation and divine forgiveness.Rubens' use of dynamic compositions and his ability to convey deep spiritual narratives through physical form and color are palpable. The swirling clouds and the contrast of warm and cool tones enhance the ethereal and transcendent nature of the scene, evoking a poignant sense of movement and interaction between the divine and the mortal. This painting not only exemplifies Rubens' skills as a storyteller through art but also serves as a profound visual meditation on themes of redemption, suffering, and the power of saintly intercession.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
