More about this artwork

"Decius Mus Addressing the Legions" is a captivating work by the Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens, believed to have been painted around 1616. This dynamic and expressive painting represents a significant moment from Roman history where the hero, Publius Decius Mus, addresses his legions before the battle. The painting vividly portrays Decius Mus as he stands elevated on a plinth, gesturing passionately towards the heavens. His figure is draped in a striking red cloak, highlighting his role as the central character amidst a group of soldiers and an elderly figure. The elderly man, clothed in an intricate fur garment, listens attentively, holding ornate staffs or standards that signal the high significance of this assembly. The composition is bustling with energy, emphasized by the dramatic gestures and engaging expressions of the figures. The inclusion of an eagle flying overhead adds a divine or ominous element, symbolizing the possible protection or approval of the gods towards Decius Mus' sacrifice.Rubens’ masterful use of dramatic light and vibrant color not only draws the viewer's attention to the central action but also instills the scene with a sense of impending urgency, fitting for the gravity of Decius’ speech and his legendary self-sacrifice for Rome’s victory.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
