More about this artwork

Peter Paul Rubens, a master of the Baroque style, showcases his vivid imagery and dynamic composition in this stunning depiction of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The artwork captures the saint in a moment of divine grace and strength. Saint Catherine is portrayed with an intense gaze and flowing robes that swirl around her, emphasizing movement and the dramatic effect typical of Rubens' work. She holds a palm branch in her left hand, a symbol of martyrdom, signifying her steadfast faith and ultimate sacrifice. In her right hand, she gently grips the martyr's sword, pointing downward towards the remnants of the broken wheel, her other attribute. According to legend, this wheel, intended to be the instrument of her torture, miraculously shattered at her touch. The use of chiaroscuro enhances the three-dimensional form of the saint, casting dramatic shadows and highlights that give life to her ethereal figure. Rubens' skillful handling of the engraving medium is evident in the detailed textures and the fluidity of lines, which convey both the softness of her attire and the harshness of the broken wheel beneath her. This captivating image not only reflects Rubens’ artistic prowess but also serves as a profound religious icon, illustrating the power of faith and resilience.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
