More about this artwork

Artist: Peter Paul Rubens"Drukkersmerk van Jan van Meurs" is an intriguing piece by the renowned Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens, dating back to the early 17th century. This painting serves as a printer's mark, a unique emblem used by publishers, particularly in the realm of early printed books. It features a rich composition characterized by a dynamic interplay of symbols and figures, indicative of Rubens’ masterful Baroque style. In the center of the image, the viewer’s attention is drawn to a large, ornate shield. Embellished with a central dove, the shield symbolizes peace or perhaps the Holy Spirit, a common motif in Christian iconography. Wrapped around the dove is a snake, often representing wisdom and eternity, biting its own tail—a classic ouroboros.Surrounding the central emblem are various decorative elements that enhance the symbolism and grandeur of the work. To the left and right, human figures adorned in classical helmets suggest a reverence for ancient learning and virtues. Above the shield, two owls perch beside a chalice from which a rooster emerges. The owls could symbolize wisdom, while the rooster often heralds the start of a new day, perhaps metaphorically indicating enlightenment or knowledge brought forth by the printed word.Overall, Rubens has created not just a decorative emblem but a rich tapestry of symbols that vividly encapsulates the intellectual and artistic ambitions of the era.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
