More about this artwork

"Touch" (1617-1618) by Peter Paul Rubens is a fascinating and chaotic allegory rooted deeply in human sensory experiences and the lushness of the physical world. In this painting, Rubens masterfully mixes elements of war and peace, nature and artifice, driving a narrative that simultaneously celebrates and critiques the very essence of touch and physicality. The composition is densely populated with objects and figures, each meticulously detailed, portraying both the spoils and horrors of war and the tranquility and intimacy of personal moments. On the left, war is depicted through the gathering of armour and horsemen, generating a sense of impending conflict. Contrasting this, the central and right sections of the artwork are filled with scenes of softer subjects, including an embracing couple, symbolizing tenderness and love. This main couple is set against backgrounds filled with other artworks—paintings within the painting—suggesting perhaps a reflection on the nature of art and creation itself. The array of armour and weapons, intricately painted, spills across the foreground, leading the eye towards groups of people and various still lives that populate the space, which lends a chaotic yet ordered feel to the scene. Large swathes of fabric, dramatically draped, add movement and guide the viewer's gaze through the elaborate scene. Meanwhile, the lush landscape in the background and the inclusion of other natural elements like birds and trees inject life and vigor into the tableau.Through "Touch," Rubens invites the viewer to ponder the complexities of human experience—the tangible and intangible, the brutal and the gentle.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
