More about this artwork

We are delighted to feature the poignant artwork, "Madonna and Child," created by the Flemish Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens between approximately 1615 and 1618. This evocative painting captures the tender and intimate moment between the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child, a timeless theme Rubens explored with deep emotion and refined skill. In this work, Mary is depicted with grace and maternal gentleness as she supports the Christ Child who stands upright with the aid of her guiding hand. The child, rendered in a lifelike, robust form typical of Rubens’ depictions of infant figures, gazes innocently towards his surroundings. Mary's expression is serene and contemplative, her gaze softly directed towards her son, emphasizing the bond of love and protection. The composition is intimate yet powerful, set against a dark, neutral background that enhances the luminosity of the skin tones and the rich textures of the fabric. Mary’s attire is rendered in warm, deep reds and muted browns, colors that signify both her humanity and regal status.Peter Paul Rubens' mastery in conveying emotions through texture, color, and composition is evident, making "Madonna and Child" not only a representation of divine and maternal love but also a showcase of his skills in capturing the essence of human tenderness.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
