More about this artwork

Peter Paul Rubens' "The Incredulity of Saint Thomas" is a profound exploration of doubt and faith, painted between 1613 and 1615. This captivating work vividly illustrates the biblical story from the Gospel of John, wherein the apostle Thomas, unable to believe in the resurrection of Jesus without physical proof, is invited by Christ to touch his wounds. In this painting, Christ is depicted with a serene and patient demeanor, guiding Thomas' hand to his side where the wounds of the crucifixion are visible. Thomas, whose facial expression is a blend of skepticism and awe, is closely observed by other apostles whose faces reflect varied degrees of wonder and belief.Rubens’ mastery of color and detail is evident in the realistic depiction of the figures and the drapery of the garments, particularly the striking red cloak of Christ, which not only highlights His central position but also visually represents His sacrifice and divine nature. This painting is not just a religious piece but a powerful commentary on human nature and the perpetual conflict between doubt and faith. Rubens brings this moment to life with such emotion and depth that viewers cannot help but feel drawn into the scene, pondering the mysteries of faith along with Thomas and the other apostles.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
