More about this artwork

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's woodcut, "Berghaus mit Gewitterwolke" (Mountain House with Thundercloud) from 1917, portrays a dynamic and expressive landscape overwhelmed by the forces of nature. The work captures a rural mountainous scene, centered around an alpine cottage, which is depicted under the imposing presence of a swirling thundercloud. This piece is characterized by its vigorous and angular lines, which are quintessential of Kirchner’s style, reflecting the tension and emotion of the Expressionist movement. The force of the weather is almost palpable, as lines streak across the sky, suggesting the onslaught of wind and rain. Trees bend under the power of the storm, their forms twisted and tormented in a wild dance with the elements. The deep, dark cuts of the woodblock print technique enhance the dramatic and somewhat ominous feeling of the scene, which is filled with a raw intensity. The use of contrast between the dark and light areas intensifies the dramatic effect and highlights the untamed nature of the landscape. This artwork leaves viewers in awe of nature's power and beauty, evoking a sense of respect and wonder towards the natural world, themes that remain relevant in today's environmental discourse.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was one of the most important German Expressionist painters. He was a co-founder of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. Die Brücke and Kirchner took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, as well as African and Oceanic art. They used woodblock printing as a medium to showcase their signature style: flat, unrealistic images with vivid colors. The recurring themes in Kirchner's artworks included exotic cultures, faraway landscapes, self-portraits, dancers and Berlin street life. His paintings and prints effectively portrayed non-European cultures despite the fact that he never traveled outside of Europe.
