More about this artwork

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s expressionist masterpiece "Selbstbildnis mit Modell" (Self-Portrait with a Model) from 1910 encapsulates the bold approach and vibrancy that defines Kirchner's oeuvre. The painting reveals two figures set against a backdrop of rich, textured color blocks that exemplify Kirchner's departure from realism towards a more emotive and abstract interpretation of his subjects. The figure occupying the foreground, presumed to be the artist's self-portrait, stands dominantly, draped in a patterned robe of orange and blue that contrasts sharply against his dark features and the black outlines that define him. His pose is assertive, marked by the confident grip on what appears to be a smoking pipe, suggesting a moment of intense self-reflection or creative pause.Beside him, a secondary figure, the model, is seated in a relaxed yet contemplative posture. Displayed in softer, muted tones of yellow and blue, the model’s presence juxtaposes the forceful appearance of the artist, providing a balance of energies within the composition. The interaction—or perhaps the intentional lack of it—between the artist and the model speaks to the complexities of self-engagement and observation inherent in the artistic process. This work not only highlights Kirchner’s distinctive use of color and form but also invites viewers to ponder the relationship between creator and muse, and the introspective nature of artistic self-portrayal. It serves as a vivid example of the artist's exploration of identity and expression, themes ever-present throughout his career.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was one of the most important German Expressionist painters. He was a co-founder of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. Die Brücke and Kirchner took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, as well as African and Oceanic art. They used woodblock printing as a medium to showcase their signature style: flat, unrealistic images with vivid colors. The recurring themes in Kirchner's artworks included exotic cultures, faraway landscapes, self-portraits, dancers and Berlin street life. His paintings and prints effectively portrayed non-European cultures despite the fact that he never traveled outside of Europe.
