More about this artwork

"Sitzendes Mädchen Mit Hut" (Seated Girl with a Hat), created in 1904 by the German Expressionist artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, presents a striking and vibrant portrayal of a young woman seated in a relaxed pose. Painted with broad and expressive brushstrokes, this artwork captures the essence of the young woman adorned in a flowing dress and a wide-brimmed hat, enhancing her enigmatic aura.Set against a whimsical and colorful background that exudes spontaneity and fluidity, Kirchner’s use of vivid colors and bold outlines gives the painting a dynamic and modern feel. His distinctive approach to the rendering of forms and use of color reflect the Expressionist movement's focus on emotional and psychological representation rather than physical accuracy, thereby evoking a sense of inner experience rather than exterior reality. This work exemplifies Kirchner's fascination with the human figure and his ability to communicate mood and expression through seemingly simple yet profoundly impactful artistic choices.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was one of the most important German Expressionist painters. He was a co-founder of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. Die Brücke and Kirchner took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, as well as African and Oceanic art. They used woodblock printing as a medium to showcase their signature style: flat, unrealistic images with vivid colors. The recurring themes in Kirchner's artworks included exotic cultures, faraway landscapes, self-portraits, dancers and Berlin street life. His paintings and prints effectively portrayed non-European cultures despite the fact that he never traveled outside of Europe.
