More about this artwork
The painting depicts two figures drawn with expressive lines and minimal color. The top figure is seated, with legs bent and one arm resting on the knee. This figure is wearing a blue headband, with blonde hair peeking out, and has a notably introspective or melancholic expression. The lower figure is also minimally colored, appearing almost translucent, with more defined contours in black forming the silhouette. Notably, this figure wears a round, dark blue element around the hips, resembling a belt or garment, bending in an ambiguous, fluid pose.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
