More about this artwork
The painting depicts the remains of an old, weathered gable of a house, its structure bare and partially collapsed. Dark, skeletal wooden beams frame the scene, stark against lighter tones. The walls, splintered and worn, show remnants of orange and red, suggesting brick or plaster that has long faded. The roof is largely gone, leaving open sections where blue and gray brushstrokes hint at the sky beyond.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
