More about this artwork
In the painting, a young girl is depicted in a reclining, almost contorted pose on a neutral-toned background. Her body is folded such that she is kneeling and resting her face on both elbows. The girl's flesh tones are rendered with washes of pink, blue, and white, highlighting the physical contours and the subtle play of light across her form. Her dark, voluminous hair cascades around her shoulders and onto the ground, framing her face, which is turned towards the viewer. Her expression is serene, with closed eyes and slightly parted lips, evoking a sense of vulnerability and introspection. The garment she wears is loose and translucent, hinting at the form beneath without fully revealing it. Light brushstrokes in pink and blue enhance the texture of the fabric.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
