More about this artwork
In the painting, a narrow path leads toward a house under the shadow of tall, dark green trees. The colors are muted with a predominance of blue and green shades. To the left, a female figure in a blue dress with a hat walks along the path, adding a human element to the otherwise still landscape. You can see the textured brush strokes throughout, creating a vibrant and slightly abstract depiction of the scene. The house, partially hidden by the lush greenery, has a classical window visible and a fence that borders its front yard.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
