More about this artwork
The painting depicts an elevated view of a small town, bathed in soft, natural light. Clustered houses with pitched roofs in shades of orange, purple, and cream dominate the foreground. Prominently, a tall factory chimney rises above the rooftops, hinting at industrial activity. Beyond the dense settlement, a vast expanse of a blue-hued landscape suggests a river or lake, bordered by a distant horizon. The sky overhead is streaked with lavender and pale yellow, suggesting either dawn or dusk.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
