More about this artwork
The painting depicts a seated male figure, his body oriented slightly to the right, yet his face confronts the viewer head-on with an intense, direct gaze. The man has stark, deeply set eyes, a pronounced hooked nose, and a thinly mustached upper lip, contributing to a somewhat austere expression. His dark hair is neatly parted in the middle. He wears a dark green, almost black suit with a textured, wrinkly look, emphasizing the folds and contours of the fabric, and a white shirt is visible at the collar. His hands are clasped in front of him, resting just above his knees. The background of the painting is minimal, mostly a muted cream color, directing the focus solely on the figure.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
