More about this artwork
This painting showcases a figure depicted with angular, abstract shapes. The central figure, presumably a girl, is dressed in a striking red skirt, flared out as if caught in a swift movement or a gust of wind. Her upper body is clothed in a blue top that contrasts vividly with the red of the skirt. Her face is merely suggested by a few swift lines and a bold dab of orange, leaning forward as if in mid-motion or dance. The background is minimalistic, composed of rough, earthy tones and subtle blotches, possibly indicating a nondescript, simplified environment.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
