More about this artwork
In Egon Schiele's painting, we see a wintery urban scene viewed from an elevated perspective. The dominant feature is a snow-dusted rooftop of a large building adorned with multiple chimneys, some casting shadows across the snowy surfaces. Below, the façades of several houses are visible, characterized by their rustic textures and a variety of windows, some of which are vibrantly colored in shades of green, red, and blue, contrasting starkly with the muted earth tones that dominate the composition. Leafless trees with intricate branches add a delicate touch to the foreground, enhancing the sense of a cold, silent winter day. The sky is depicted in a creamy, almost monochromatic light, suggesting an overcast atmosphere typical of the chilly season.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
