More about this artwork
The painting captures the portrait of an elderly man with sharp, defining features. He has a stern and weary expression, gazing directly forward with sunken, thoughtful eyes. His skin reveals the natural creases and lines associated with aging, and his head is mostly bald, with just a few strands of white hair on the sides. The man has a prominent, bushy white mustache and a matching beard that adds to his distinguished look. He wears a dark, formal suit with a black bowtie and a white shirt visible at the collar area. The background is subdued, rendered in a dark, monotone shade that contrasts sharply with the lighter tones of his face.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
