More about this artwork
The painting portrays a stylized partial depiction of what appears to be a piece of armor, specifically from a horse harness. The central figure is mostly in beige and white, with prominent features, including a large eye with a star-shaped pupil drawn within it. There’s a striking red element that swoops over the top of the figure, possibly representing part of a decorative flourish on the armor. The background is a rich, textured brown, providing a contrast that highlights the armor segment. Dark lines outline the shapes, adding definition and a sense of dimension.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
