More about this artwork
The painting displays a man in profile, with his head turned to his left, allowing a view from the side. His facial features are sharply outlined, with prominent cheekbones and a well-defined, arching brow. He has a mustache that droops slightly at the ends. His expression is contemplative, characterized by a slightly furrowed brow and pursed lips. His right hand is raised near his face, with fingers spread apart, creating a dynamic gesture as if he is in the midst of a thoughtful or emphatic expression. The drawing emits a sense of immediacy and intimacy, capturing the essence of the man’s character through the detailed, expressive lines and the thoughtful composition of his pose.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
