More about this artwork
This expressionist painting depicts a cluster of buildings, tightly packed and overlapping, rendered in a palette dominated by yellows and oranges, juxtaposed with patches of greens, blues, and whites. The architectural forms are angular and distorted, lacking uniformity in scale or perspective, contributing to a sense of dynamic tension and vibrancy. Some of the rooftops are sharply pointed, while others appear flat or softened. Surrounding the buildings, the environment features undulating terrains with curving paths or rivers, and interspersed trees; these elements also defy conventional perspective, enhancing the painting's dramatic and somewhat chaotic aesthetic.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
