More about this artwork
The painting depicts a full-length female nude, kneeling with her legs slightly parted and her feet tucked beneath her. She raises her arms, clasping them in front of her shoulders, which creatively obscures part of her face while effectively drawing attention to her eyes, that are gazing directly forward. Her red lips contrast with her pale skin, which is subtly shaded with hints of blue and green, giving it an almost ethereal quality. Her curly, chestnut hair frames her face and cascades down past her shoulders. The background is a plain, off-white color, focusing all attention on the figure herself.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
