More about this artwork

In the painting "A Foxhound On The Scent" by George Stubbs, we see a beautifully detailed portrayal of a foxhound in action. The hound is captured mid-motion, with its nose close to the ground, clearly focused on following a scent. This is indicative of a hunting scene, where the foxhound's acute sense of smell is critical for tracking. The monochrome palette of the artwork emphasizes texture and form, focusing the viewer’s attention on the musculature and coat of the dog, as well as highlighting the intensity in its expression. Stubbs manages to intricately render the fur and features of the foxhound, demonstrating both strength and agility in its posture. The background is understated and sketchy, suggesting a natural, possibly wooded environment without drawing attention away from the hound itself. The shadows and highlights on the dog's body enhance the three-dimensional feel, giving a vivid sense of life and movement to the image.Stubbs, known for his accurate and lifelike depictions of animals, particularly horses, shows the same keen observation and skill in capturing the essence of this foxhound. The artwork not just showcases the physical attributes of the dog but also subtly hints at the dog’s focus and determination, which is typical of the breed during a hunt. This painting would appeal to those interested in the anatomy of animals, the dynamics of movement, and the naturalistic portrayal of scenes from rural life.

George Stubbs (25 August 1724 – 10 July 1806) was an English painter, best known for his paintings of horses. Self-trained, Stubbs learnt his skills independently from other great artists of the 18th century such as Reynolds and Gainsborough. Stubbs' output includes history paintings, but his greatest skill was in painting animals, perhaps influenced by his love and study of anatomy. His series of paintings on the theme of a lion attacking a horse are early and significant examples of the Romantic movement that emerged in the late 18th century. He enjoyed royal patronage. His painting, Whistlejacket hangs in the National Gallery, London.
