More about this artwork

The painting titled "Anvil" by George Stubbs captures an elegant portrayal of a solitary horse in a tranquil landscape setting. The horse is depicted with a glossy bay coat and a notably alert and noble stance. It stands in the foreground of the composition, making it the focal point of the artwork. Its muscular build and graceful pose suggest it is a well-bred animal, possibly a thoroughbred, which aligns with Stubbs' frequent focus on such subjects due to his deep interest and expertise in equine anatomy. In the background, the natural setting includes lush green trees and a navy blue sky subtly streaked with clouds, suggesting either early morning or late afternoon light. There is also a glimpse of a rustic building, possibly a stable, partially obscured by the trees. The ground is covered in grass and foliage, enhancing the rural feel of the scene. The overall atmosphere of the painting is both serene and dignified, reflecting Stubbs’ ability to imbue his animal subjects with a sense of vitality and individual personality. This work exemplifies Stubbs' mastery in using the interplay of light and shadow to create depth and realism in his depictions of animals in their natural settings.

George Stubbs (25 August 1724 – 10 July 1806) was an English painter, best known for his paintings of horses. Self-trained, Stubbs learnt his skills independently from other great artists of the 18th century such as Reynolds and Gainsborough. Stubbs' output includes history paintings, but his greatest skill was in painting animals, perhaps influenced by his love and study of anatomy. His series of paintings on the theme of a lion attacking a horse are early and significant examples of the Romantic movement that emerged in the late 18th century. He enjoyed royal patronage. His painting, Whistlejacket hangs in the National Gallery, London.
